Tower Hobbies #1 Super Savers Club, is it worth it?

Tower Hobbies is an online hobby store based in Champaign IL that has been in business since 1971.  They offer a wide assortment of hobby related products and a lot information for those who are new to a particular field.  For $9.99 you have the option of joining their savers program and after 5 months I wanted to share my thoughts on whether it’s worth it or not.

All orders cost $9.99 to ship via standard ground shipping.  If you order over $150.00 dollars you get free shipping and that right there makes this deal worth it because you have already made back your money.  In the past 5 months I have placed 4 orders and here is what I got for my $9.99 membership:

  • Order #1: Tamiya VW Beetle & Accessories
    • $9.99 free shipping
    • 3 free issues to Car Action magazine ($15.00 value)
  • Order #2: Tamiya Mercedes C11 & Accessories
    • $9.99 free shipping
    • $60.00 savings for order more than $300
  • Order #3: Traxxas Summit
    • $9.99 free shipping
    • $60.oo savings for order more than $300
  • Order #4: Tamiya Lunchbox and Summit Batteries
    • $9.99 free shipping
    • $60.00 savings for order more than $300

That adds up to $180 in discounts, $40 dollars in shipping, and $15.00 worth of magazines for a grand total of $235.  I spent $9.99 and save $235.00.  So the answer is yes, even if you are placing just one order you end up get 3 magazines for free and this makes being in the club worth it!

TIP: My last order was just north of $800 and included the $500 Traxxas Summit and then $300 for a Tamiya Lunch box and some accessories.  $60 is the largest discount you can get if you spend more than $300 dollars so what I did was place two orders.  Both where over $300 which means I got free shipping and (2) $60.00 discounts.  A $120 discount on an $800 order is 15% off.

Would you still buy from Amazon if you had to pay taxes?

Currently Amazon is arguing/fighting to preserve its position where it does not have to collect taxes in states where it is not physically present.  The following snippet is from an article that I read (link provided):

“In its 1992 Quill decision, the U.S. Supreme Court held that a state could not require a retailer to charge sales tax to the state’s residents unless the firm had a “physical presence” within the state. The Court’s rationale was that requiring non-physically-present sellers to collect sales taxes under the diverse rules in place in the 45 states and thousands of local jurisdictions that levy them would constitute an excessive burden on interstate commerce.”

My wife and I are very big shoppers with Amazon and other online retailers.  More days than not there are packages sitting outside our door.  We order everything from books, to computers, to baby stuff, stereos, bikes, etc.  But what would happen if Amazon and others had to start charging us taxes?  Would we still shop there?  Would this drive us to more local stores?  If tax savings was the only benefit then we would drop them and shop local but it’s not.  Here are some of the reasons why we shop online:

  1. Price – places like Amazon and Zappos always have a better price than local retailers.
  2. Free Shipping – every place we order from we get free shipping
  3. Comparisons – we can review multiple versions of a product a lot quicker
  4. Reviews – we really pay attention to feedback on sites like Amazon
  5. Convenience – we have two young kids and we can shop late at night or early in the morning
  6. Coupons/Discounts – we always find deals at the sites like Coupon Cabin
  7. Quick Shipping – because we live in Chicago we find a lot of our orders coming in one or two days.

So for us, regardless of taxes being collected, we will continue to shop online.  I support Amazon in its fight but regardless I will continue to be a very active customer.

Who the heck wants to listen to me?

Most everything that I do I learn by scouring the web, reading what I can, and going in over my head.  The way I figure it is if one entry can help one person get through something they didn’t know then it was worth the time to write it down.  I also think its healthy to look back over a years worth of entries and see what has happened in my life.

While taking an art class in college I was talking with the teacher about her work.  She showed our class one of her paintings but what was more interesting was that she said she could look back over her work and see things about herself that came through in her work.  Life events like divorce, sickness, and other stuff affects what we say, how and what we do.  So at the end of 2010 I want to see what I can see and that is why I’m here.
